In 2019 I visited Segedunum at Newcastle where near to the fort itself you can visit a replica of the wall. I did a selfie to give you an idea of the height of the wall.

Segedunum is the most excavated fort on Hadrian´s Wall. It housed around 600 soldiers. Although most of the Roman stonework has been removed over the Centuries archeologists were able to trace the walls of the buildings. The plans of most Roman forts are similar to this, but Segedunum is the only place in the western Roman Empire where you can see the whole fort still laid out.

You do not get the impression of the size of the wall when you are visiting sites like Housestead or Vindolanda and walk along the wall because only the foundations of the wall are left. Just imagine photo number 4 with the wall still at its original size . It must have been an impressive site and quite an obstacle. In the following years I visited various places along the wall. You find most of them on the subpages of this chapter. I took two screenshots from a youtube documentary. The cross section shows the setup of the defense which consisted of much more than just the wall. The overview map lists the main forts and strongholds along the wall.
