The South Tyne Gap

The River South Tyne rises high in the North Pennines at Tynehead Fell a few miles south of Alston and flows in a roughly north-easterly direction to Warden Rock, near Hexham, where it joins the River North Tyne to form the River Tyne. The valley of the South Tyne is sometimes called the 'Tyne Gap'. From the source of the South Tyne up to Tynemouth in Newcastle - where the ferries from Ijmuiden enter Newcastle harbour - we have visited many places along the river. Some photos as highlights on this page.

There is a great PDF leaflet about the South Tyne Trail downloadable here: 40210 ECCP SouthTyneTrail2 (northpennines.org.uk)

We took many of our walk ideas from that leaflet.
