Winskill Stones - Goat Scar Lane - Catrigg Force - Stainforth Force - Scaleber Force - Skipton - Embsay Reservoir

Refreshed from the rest we had a long drive to Langcliffe in Ribblesdale on Monday. We continued out of Langcliffe up to Winskill Stones which is a small nature reserve set high up to the northeast of Langcliffe. One patch of limestone pavement has a lone hawthorne tree. We intended to go only as far as Catrigg Force but got lost and after a strenous downhill scramble ended up down in Stainforth. We took a rest there and walked back up again through Goat Scar Lane to finally find the waterfall. We had great views of Pen-y-Ghent on the way back. After a picnic at the lone tree we drove back down to Stainforth. and explored Stainforth Force which is situated on the river Ribble just downstream from Stainforth Bridge. There is a large area of exposed limestone on the banks of the river next to the waterfall.

On our way back to Pateley Bridge we took a side road at Settle towards Skipton with Scalebar Force along the way. The waterfall is situated in a small wooded gorge. On the slippery descent Frank fell and the camera hit his ribs. He was covered in mud....

The waterfall however was great. The river cascades 12 metres down the limestone rocks in a series of steps. A blanket of thick moss on the rocks adds to the lush feel of the gorge. Afterwards a meal in a pub at Skipton and a short stroll around Skipton where the Leeds-Liverpool canal runs through the centre of the town. Finally we had an evening stroll around Embsay reservoir to the north of Skipton with a lovely view towards Embsay Crag (last photos).
