Gelts Wood

The River Gelt is a tributary of the River Irthing. You can park the car at the Gelt Bridge Viaduct, completed in 1835. The walk into Gelts Wood starts at the viaduct. A wooded gorge with the River Gelt on your left and tall red sandstone cliffs on either side. High above the walk is the Roman Written Rock of Gelt. Dating back to AD 207, it records the quarry workings of Roman soldiers belonging to the second legion. On the rockface there is extensive carved graffiti from roman times. It included notes and comments about the officers. The one below was the only one we could find.
