Brampton  old Church above the River Irthing

The church was built on the site of a Roman fort. The church building dates from the 12th century, with later alterations and additions. Some of the stones have been obtained from Hadrian´s Wall. The tower and nave were demolished between 1787 and 1789, although a porch was added in 1861. It was replaced as the parish church in 1878 by St. Martin´s Church in the town of Brampton. The church was declared redundant in 1978 and the internal furnishings were removed. The huge graveyard reaches out to a cliff from where you can look down on the River Irthing. We visited in June 2019. It was a hot and sunny afternoon with not ideal lighting for taking photos. So it is on my list to come here again in more favourable conditions photography wise.
