Burnhope Reservoir - Great Stony Hill

The walk we did is shown on the map below. It was on the first weekend of our our holiday in September 2013. Burnhope Reservoir is just off the A689 from Alston to Crook. We parked the car at the reservoir and had to constantly climb up towards Great Stony Hill. A very strong wind (as you can see on some of the photos) and glorious sunshine caused heavy sunburn but the walk gave us fantastic views of the area. We were too tired to continue to Three Pikes from Great Stony Hill, had a rest at the Hut marked on the map which gave us some shelter from the wind and turned round to go back. The only other walkers we met were a totally frustrated couple who stayed in the area for two weeks with constant rain. This was their last day and the weather finally changed! In the middle of this wilderness with the howling wind we could hear the typical Sunday noise of motorcycles racing along the road with its steep incline towards Killhope. I will never forget the puzzled look of the owner of Alston´s pharmacy when I called in the next morning and asked for suncream. I found out what a rare commodity that is in the Pennines.
