Long Meg and her daughters - Little Salkled Mill - Kirkoswald

The Long Meg Stone circle near the village Little Salkeld consists of 59 stones, although originally there were about 70. The largest stone is Long Meg herself, a 12 feet tall standing stone that bears faint traces of mysterious cup and ring markings as well as concentric circles, which are thought to be 4500 years old. Constructed of red sandstone quarried from the banks of the River Eden, she is positioned just outside the circle. Seen from the centre of the circle, she is aligned with the midwinter sunset.

We bought some fresh bread at the Little Salkeld Mill. The mill was built in 1745 and uses water power and traditional techniques to produce a range of stone-ground flours.

It was only a short drive from there to Kirkoswald where we had a nice lunch at the Featherstone Arms and went to see the Mill Cottage

(last five photos).
