Bollihope and Harehope Quary

After the early morning visit to Hamsterley Forest with the shots of the waterfall I drove towards Bollihope. I turned right from the main road from Egglestone to Stanhope towards Frosterley. I crossed the stream, passed the parking lot and stopped further up the road to take a photo of Bollihope quarry from that side of the Burn (photo #1 marked on the map with a small x) . We had visited Bollihope in 2019 and I enclose four photos of the previous visit (photos #2 - 5). It looks surreal with the huge spoil heaps looking a bit like ancient pyramids.

At that stopover I also managed to take the photos of the Curlew (see previous page).

I happily continued towards White Kirkley (see map) where I parked and took a walk along the stream towards Harehope quarry which is part of the "Weardale Way". It was an interesting walk with the Bishopley Lime Killns along the way; the derelict site of the Lead Mine and finally the view from the top towards Harehope quarry (you can make out the building and the windwheel of the eco project to the left of the pond). The photos do not do justice to the steep drop from the viewing platform down into the quarry!

From the viewing platform I walked the same way back to the car and drove to Harehope quarry.

There is a project at the quarry that runs an eco-classroom built entirely by volunteers, from which it delivers environmental education, field studies and education for sustainable development. The project has also developed a smallholding and created a really nice nature reserve. I had my picnic there and wandered around taking some photographs afterwards (last 3 photos).
